Mekong Salt Lab is currently implementing innovative solution models at two farms belonging to Champion Farmers in Tra Vinh province, a region heavily impacted by saltwater intrusion in the Mekong Delta. The models focus on hydroponic vegetable farming, water collection and retention, and water treatment.

The first Champion Farmer is Mr. Sang, residing in Hoa Loi commune, Chau Thanh district. This area faces a severe shortage of water for crop irrigation during the dry season. Mr. Sang is an experienced farmer who has been cultivating vegetables for the market as the main income for his family for many years. The implemented models at his farm are static hydroponics and water collection and retention.

The second Champion Farmer is Mrs. Van, living on Con Chim (Hoa Minh commune, Chau Thanh district), a small islet in the middle of the Co Chien River, near the estuary. Recently, prolonged saltwater intrusion has affected the livelihoods of many households on the islet, including Mrs. Van’s family. Mrs. Van’s main income comes from growing rice, vegetables, and flowers, aquaculture, and providing services such as meals and homestay rooms. The implemented models at her farm include static hydroponics, recirculating hydroponics, water collection and retention, and water treatment.

Mekong Salt Lab hopes that sharing the experiences and achievements of these two Champion Farmers will not only contribute to the fight against salinity but also inspire the local farming community. We believe that by adopting innovative solution models, people can enhance their resilience to climate change and ensure sustainable livelihoods.
